Pecha Kucha #36 Beginnings / New Starts

Wednesday 27 February 2019
7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

The Tin At The Coal Vaults

It’s been a while, but here we are in 2019. A new beginning you might say. So that’s it…beginnings. Speakers will us about something they started, why – and how it turned out. Or maybe they’ll tell us about their plans for the new year – maybe a new beginning hasn’t yet begun…

The Tin At The Coal Vaults

5pm – 6pm Boudica Festival Pre-meet – FREE
Come and meet others attending in the festival. Talk to the organisers and get inside info on line-up, times and plans for the event. If there is a call for it, we will be launching a solo festival goer Facebook group where people can meet and chat before the event and for future events.

6.30pm MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. Film Screening – FREE to Boudica Festival Ticket holders or £3 for those without.
Drawn from a cache of personal video recordings from the past 22 years, director Steve Loveridge’s Sundance award winning MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. is a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star.

She began as Matangi. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka’s armed Tamil resistance, she hid from the government in the face of a vicious and bloody civil war. When her family fled to the UK, she became Maya, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London. Finally, the world met her as M.I.A. when she emerged on the global stage, having created a mashup, cut-and-paste identity that pulled from every corner of her journey along the way; a sonic sketchbook that blended Tamil politics, art school punk, hip-hop beats and the unwavering, ultra-confident voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth.

Never one to compromise on her vision, Maya kept her camera rolling throughout. MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. provides unparalleled, intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success and fame explodes, becoming one of the most recognizable, outspoken and provocative voices in music today.

“AS HUMANS, WE DON’T USE OUR PAST AND OUR HISTORY TO WORK OUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WHAT OUR ROLE IS IN THE PRESENT. AND IF YOU CAN’T USE THE PAST TO DEFINE YOUR PRESENT, THEN IT SHOULD NOT BE AN ELEMENT THAT HOLDS BACK THE FUTURE.” M.I.A. INTERVIEW WITH GUARDIAN GUIDE

Flatpack Festival present: The ICHI Anime Show

The Tin At The Coal Vaults

The ICHI Anime Show

Summing up one of ICHI’s spellbinding performances is a bit of a challenge, but Steve Lamacq did a decent job when he said “What on earth is this? It’s brilliant!”. The Bristol-based Japanese singer-songwriter, instrument-maker and performance artist delivers quite the show, and to say he’s unique is something of an understatement. Taking inspiration for his art from far and wide – a melting-pot of punk, reggae and dub, Henri Salvador, tribal music and old scratchy 78s, and with his trusty sampler never far away, ICHI produces something totally idiosyncratic and entirely new. It’s fun and exciting. He takes the notion of a one-man band to new limits combining his handmade inventions with steel drums, toys and everyday objects all in the space of one brilliant set.

For this special one-off performance Flatpack (known for putting on the brilliantly eclectic Flatpack Festival) have commissioned ICHI to write and perform new music to a selection of classic Japanese animated short films from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Featuring some of the finest short anime films by pioneers such as Osamu Tezuka and Keiichi Tanaami, these psychedelic and offbeat films inspired a whole generation of Japanese animators. Expect to have your mind melted and your senses aroused in what will be a very memorable evening of live music and film.

This live score screening is part of Japan 2021: 100 years of Japanese Cinema, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. It is also produced by CineCov, brought to you by Flatpack on behalf of Film Hub Midlands with support from the BFI using funds from the National Lottery.

This event is for 18+.

Derek Jarman’s Jubilee on the Jubilee. What more do I need to say really? But I will!! Made in 1978 Jubilee is a hand grenade of a punk film. Queen Elizabeth the first travels into the future conjured up by her occult aide. Encountering the megalomania of big business as well as a gang of violent marauding killers. Derek Jarman doesn’t spare the shocks, while electrifying punk rock numbers are delivered by a select few. Jubilee is punk, savage, post-apocalyptic street theatre- and great fun!!!!!!!

The Film Liberation Project 2.0 –

Join the Film Liberation Project: A Free Crash Course in Filmmaking!

● No film studies or filmmaking experience necessary.
● Equipment will be provided. (but if you have a mobile phone with a camera bring that too!)
● Food will be provided.
● Open to all Hillfields and Foleshill residents over the age of 18 or those under 18 accompanied by a parent or guardian

From Sunday, September 15th, to Sunday, November 24th, the Film Liberation Project is offering a completely free, 12-week crash course in filmmaking. Whether
you’re a beginner or have some experience, this collaborative program is designed
to make filmmaking accessible to everyone. Plus, you’ll have the chance to showcase your work at the Made in Cov Festival in December!

The Film Liberation Project is all about breaking down barriers and empowering you to become a filmmaker. It’s about making the most of what you have, giving yourself
permission to try new things, and learning through hands-on experience. Over these 12 weeks, you’ll watch, discuss, collaborate, and even make mistakes—all as part of the learning process.

The course kicks off on Sunday, September 15th, at The Tin Music and Arts and wraps up on Sunday, November 24th. Led by local filmmakers Ben Cook and
Michelle Bailey, you’ll dive into different film genres and explore ideas that bring you
joy. You’ll also get to recreate your favourite movie scenes!

Throughout the program, you’ll work on your own projects and collaborate with others. With guidance from the filmmakers, you’ll learn new techniques, themes, and theories—all while adopting a “learn by doing” approach. The course is flexible, allowing you to engage as much or as little as you like, based on your learning style and interests.

There will also be opportunities for one-on-one sessions with the filmmakers to discuss your work and troubleshoot any challenges with fellow participants.
Interested in learning filmmaking in a supportive environment? Join the Film
Liberation Project

The commitment expected over our 12 week programme will be:
• Attend Sunday sessions every weekend for 12 weeks, 11:00am – 2pm with lunch
provided (dietary requirements)

Plus
• Refreshments and lunch
• Screening opportunity at The Made in Cov Festival in December.
