50 years ago, jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby released Afro-Harping, and here the brilliant young harpist Alina Bzhezhinska celebrates the legacy of a seminal Black woman artist from the 50s.
The band that Bzhezhinska had enlisted for this project included Christian Vaughan (keyboards, musical director), Gareth Lockrane (flutes), Julie Walkington (double bass) and Joel Prime, the only survivor from the “Inspiration” band, on drums and percussion.
Dorothy Ashby was one of the “most accomplished modern jazz harpist”, who established the harp as an improvising jazz instrument, beyond earlier use as a novelty or background orchestral instrument, proving the harp could play bebop as adeptly as the instruments commonly associated with jazz, such as the saxophone or piano.
Renown harpist Alina Bzhezhinska is celebrating 50th anniversary of the release of Ashby’s most innovative album “Afro-Harping” with her new formidable band featuring Gareth Lochrane – Flutes, Christian Vaughan – Keys, Julie Walkington – Bass andJoel Prime – Drums.
