Ideas of Noise is an exciting new festival of experimental sound based in Birmingham with a focus on connecting experimental audiences and performers of different genres across the West Midlands and creating opportunities for emerging and established local artists. The programme spans free improv, electronica, sound art, noise, contemporary classical and more, featuring a mixture of performances, installations, workshops and participation areas.

SOUND OBJECT SEEING
A festival-within-a-festival where music and art collide. Where the visual plays a fundamental part of the process and performance. Audiences are taken on a journey where the experience of listening and watching constantly shifts and is re-appraised.
Andrew Spackman curates a feast of audio-visual delights including:
MAMMOTH BEAT ORGAN
(SAM UNDERWOOD/GRAHAM DUNNING)
The Mammoth Beat Organ is a modular, mechanical music contraption by Sam Underwood and Graham Dunning. Designed as a two-player, semi-autonomous musical instrument, it plays unusual, sometimes erratic compositions drawing on drone music, minimalist repetition and fairground organ techniques.
Interdisciplinary theatre collective Waste Paper Opera premiere their new work Tracing Syrup: or, on the significance of rising and/or falling, inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac’s Voyage to the Moon (1657), one of the earliest science fiction novels ever written.

DRAWING ORCHESTRA
10 artists. 10 iPads. 10 projectors. The Drawing Orchestra is a 10 piece ensemble that draws live in response to, especially commissioned music. They create responsive and collaborative artworks diffused across large scale projection. The Drawing Orchestra takes on the familiar structure and tropes of an orchestral ensemble, mirroring the groupings of instrumentation and featuring a soloist and conductor.
